SUPERMAN RETURNS THE GAME (PS2) - THE KITTEN SUB QUEST

As a sub quest, some games have you collect items such as chaos emeralds. Others will scatter balloons throughout the world map. Hands up who would link KITTENS with the Superman universe locale of Metropolis city? Kittens! At a stretch, Richard Donner's 1978 Superman movie featured a scene where the 'Man of Steel' rescued a cat from a tree. Not quite iconic, but there you go!

For the featured game I'm discussing, 'Superman Returns', the game suggests (pleads?) that the player collects 100 kittens which have been mercilessly scattered throughout the city. Daft. But oddly cute, and for the collector in you, a must. They can be found both on the pavements, but also on top of buildings, including high rise towers such as the Daily Planet, helplessly meowing for help. Who knows how they've got there, but you are Superman, and Superman helps everyone, no matter how small and furry. I spent an hour collecting 30 of the felines, before sitting back and simply wondering, "What am I doing??" I should have been off fighting huge robots which weren't in the film! >>>>>>>>>>

Due to repeating this thankless task for so long, I managed to hear every sound clip Superman utters each time he snatches up a kitten (which basically involves you flying into them, more fun at full speed!). After you've collided with them, they miraculously disappear. Seeing as anything goes in this game, I thought perhaps after you collected all 100 they'd merge to form a gigantic killer Kryptonite cat...! Sadly no.
Anyway, whilst collecting the kittens, you'd hear Superman remark, "Here kitty kitty kitty" said in rather zombie-like tones. He's actually voiced by the film's gorgeous star, Brandon Routh, but here, sounds as if he'd rather be dead! The final word of "kitty" is almost said with a braindead groan! But, we can forgive him, as he looks wonderful in blue tights.

The best line would have to be, "Metropolis needs to do something about the surging kitten population." Haha! At least the game can take the piss out of itself...unless that was meant in a totally serious way, which wouldn't surprise me. As a suggestion, would it not have made more sense (at least in keeping in the theme of Superman) to have had one of his crystals broken into shards and spread across the city? No no, how silly of me, kittens are the way foward! ;)

I make no other mention of the game, other than it had a lot of potential... And anything was going to be an improvment from the Nintendo 64 version!

P.S. I'd just like to add that the final boss of this game is a tornado. The end.
